Thorpe History Book Launch - 13th April
THE LIFE & TIMES OF THORPE DIARIST JOHN BENTFIELD 1757-1838
On Saturday 13th April at 3pm in Thorpe parish church a launch is being held for a book concerning the above remarkable man. Born in Suffolk he came to Thorpe as a 22 year old to run the village school. Six years later he opened an academy teaching writing, book-keeping, surveying and other accomplishments including dancing. He also later owned a 24 acre farm and was closely associated with the church, helping with the music for many years and a church warden between 1817 and 1831. Seemingly indefatigable, he additionally was parish book-keeper, administering the complexities of the tithes and Poor Law expenses for both out-relief – the forerunner of social security - and the village workhouse. The arcane Soken jurisdiction of Thorpe, Kirby and Walton created other work including probate functions for wills he assisted with. Although living in a harsher era than ours his humanity reflects through his small diary that is no larger than a pair of hands. Its remarkable 180 year survival is due to it being passed down the generations of one family, some of whom were probably his pupils. Although he lived in Thorpe for 58 years the diary only covers 1828-31 but has given sufficient to encourage follow-up study since 2012 – more detective work than true research. This has resulted in a 144 page illustrated book, including the diary’s text, that is being sold for £10 in aid of Thorpe Church restoration fund. Sadly the book’s illustrator, Graham Ross died last autumn but a display of his work will be shown. Everyone interested is invited to attend on 13th April when representatives of local history groups will join us.
