On the 30th April 1940 a German plane crashed on the town, bringing death, injury and destruction to properties. Told for the first time, with images some of which are published for the first time, a map, and a chronology. This is a comprehensive record of that day and beyond to 2017 with the new memorial.

Aerial photography showing the geology and archaeology of the Tendring Peninsular

At our March 2019 meeting David Grayston gave us a fascinating illustrated talk on how aerial photography can show the geology and archaeology of the Tendring Peninsular

The photos showed signs of ring ditches, barrows, enclosures and roads, all visible in crop markings, when seen from above.

David explained how the underlying clay held water, with the overlying gravel allowing it to drain through, how the geography of the region had changed over the millennia and how aerial photography can reveal so much.

The road east from Colchester

At our meeting in October 2018, TDLHR member Roger Kennell gave an illustrated talk about the settlements off the old A133 and how the churches and halls are so often found away from the main settlements which had eventually gravitated to the main road from Clacton to Colchester and London.
